Check your nationality first, not your residency
Emirati passport holders enjoy visa-free entry for short visits. For most expatriate residents in the UAE, a tourist visa is required in advance, and it is your passport nationality that decides — not the fact that you live here. Confirm this before you book anything.
The daily schedule form is the centrepiece
You will be asked for a day-by-day plan covering your whole stay: date, city, what you are doing, and where you are sleeping, with a contact for each accommodation. People treat this as a formality and fill it with "sightseeing in Tokyo" for six rows. Do not. Write it properly — arrival day and hotel, the day you take the train to Kyoto, the night you are in a ryokan, the flight home. It takes an hour, and it is the document your application is effectively judged on.
It also has a happy side effect: you will spot the day you had accidentally double-booked, or the four-hour transfer you had not budgeted for.
Financial evidence, proportionate to the trip
Bank statements covering the last several months, plus your salary certificate. Japan is not looking for wealth; it is checking that the trip you described is one you can actually afford. A two-week trip with domestic flights and a mid-range hotel budget needs to be visible in the numbers. If a family member is covering costs, they provide a guarantee letter and their own financial documents.
The rest of the file
Passport with adequate validity and blank pages, UAE residence visa, Emirates ID, a photo to spec, confirmed return flights, all accommodation bookings, and an employment letter confirming your role and approved leave. Students substitute a letter from their institution. Keep everything in one folder and bring originals plus copies.
Book flights and hotels you can cancel
You need confirmed bookings to apply, but you do not want to be holding non-refundable ones if timing slips. Refundable rates or a hold that you can release costs a little more and removes the entire category of worry.
Seasons matter more than you think
Cherry blossom in spring and autumn foliage are not just crowded — they compress accommodation availability to the point where a plan made a month ahead is barely a plan. If you are targeting either window, sort accommodation first, then build the visa file around confirmed bookings rather than the other way round.
A small courtesy that reads well
Submit a tidy file. Documents in the order listed on the checklist, no dog-eared prints, nothing handwritten that could have been typed. It is a small thing and it will not rescue a weak application, but it makes a well-prepared one obvious at a glance.
